Victims of American Airlines Flight 11 - Part One

American Airlines Flight 11 was hijacked by terrorists loyal to Al-Qaeda and flown into the North Tower of The World Trade Centre killing 92 people. Here are their stories.


1. Pilot John Ogonowski (1951-2001) Aged 51




John was an avid farmer as well as a pilot, he was murdered by terrorists who took control of the cockpit of the plane. John was reassured by the terrorists that he would not be harmed, they lured him out of the cockpit by stabbing a flight attendant. John managed to activate the push to talk button so the ground contol could hear what was going on. John left behind his wife and three daughters.


2. First Officer Thomas McGuinness (1959-2001) Aged 42




Thomas was the co-pilot on Flight 11, and was a ex Navy Fighter Pilot. He left behind a wife and two children.


3. Flight Attendant Barbara Arestegui (1962-2001) Aged 38




Barbra was a flight attendant for 13 years, she loved cooking and animals. She left behind her partner. Barbra was one of the flight attendants that was stabbed by the terrorists to lure the pilot out of the cockpit.


4. Flight Attendant Jeffery Collmon (1959-2001) Aged: 41




Jeffery was living his dream job of being a flight attendant, he was said to have made friends all over the world and be safety conscious. He left behind his life partner.


5. Flight Attendant Sara Low (1973-2001) Aged: 28




Sara choose her career so she could help people. The University of Arkansas has a memorial dedicated to her. Sara gave her fathers number to a fellow flight attendant, who then managed to contact people below and give information on the hijacking.


6. Flight Attendant Karen Martin (1961-2001) Aged: 40




Karen was one of the flight attendants stabbed when the terrorists took control of flight 11. Karen was said to be competitive and very organised. There is now a scholarship fund set up in her name at her old school. Karen was the first to die on flight 11, she was said to be on the floor with stab wounds struggling to breathe.


7. Flight Attendant Kathleen Nicosia (1947-2001) Aged: 54




Kathleen loved reading and gardening. Kathleen left behind her husband and daughter.


8. Flight Attendant Betty Ong (1956-2001) Aged 45




Betty was the sort of person who frequently skipped her breaks to help a passenger. When the hijacking took place Betty called the American Airlines reservation desk to report it. She said that mace may have been used as everyone was struggling to breathe. Betty stayed on the phone all the way up until the plane crashed into the World Trade Centre.


9. Flight Attendant Jean Roger (1977-2001) Aged: 24



Jean volunteered to fly that day, and she always had an adventurous spirit. Jean's training would have told her to negotiate with the hijackers to get the plane landed safely and the passengers released.


10. Flight Attendant Dianne Snyder (1959-2001) Aged: 42




Dianne was an avid tennis player, she left behind her husband and two children. Dianne's wedding rings were recovered in the rubble and returned to her husband.
