FACT: Titanic used 825 tons of coal per day


31. Madeleine Astor (1893-1940) 1st Class - LIfeboat 4





Madeleine embarked on the Titanic aged 18 and pregnant with her millionare husband John Jacob Astor. That night her husband let her know that the ship had struck ice but the damage did not appear serious, they put on lifejackets and made their way to the gymnasium and rested there for a while, before making their way to A Deck. Madeleine bid goodbye to her husband and got into a lifeboat, John died in the sinking. After the sinking she inherited 5 million dollars and gave birth to a son whom she named after her husband.


Madeleine remarried a man named William and gave up her vast fortune, they had two sons together, this marriage did not last however and they divorced in the 1930s, Madeleine remarried again this time to a boxer named Enzo, but they too divorced a few years later. Madeleine passed away in 1940 aged 40 from a heart attack brought on by an overdose of prescription drugs.


32. Leontine Pauline Aubart (1887-1964) 1st Class - Lifeboat 9




She was on the ship with her maid Emma Sagesser and co-incidentally also onboard was her lover Benjamin Guggenheim who did not survive. She was a singer and tried to send numerous telegrams on the ship but these did not get though due to extreme demand.

In later life it was said that Emma had lots of wild parties that got so out of hand that the police had to get involved! Emma died at age 77 and is buried in France.


33. James Avery (1891-1915) Titanic Crew - Lifeboat 15

James was a Trimmer on the ship, with his previous ship being Oceanic. After the sinking he returned to England and continued working at sea, he tragically died of a stroke at just aged 24 and is buried in Southampton.


34. Bannurah Dattier Ayyub (1895-1970) 3rd Class - Lifeboat C




Bannurah was traveling on the ship to the US to visit relatives. When the ship struck the iceberg she was below deck with the other 3rd class passengers, she was alerted to danger by her cousins and went out to investigate. Finding nothing she re-entered her cabin and went back to sleep, reawakening when water came into her cabin. After the sinking she married a few months later and had seven children, she never returned to her homeland of Lebanon or saw her parents again. She kept to herself until her death in Detroit at the age of 75.


35. Maria Backstrom (1878-1947) 3rd Class-Lifeboat Unknown



Maria embarked on the Titanic with her husband and two brothers, sadly they did not survive.Initially Maria refused to enter the lifeboat but her husband persuaded her to. After the sinking she returned to Finland and gave birth to a daughter, she remained in Finland for the rest of her life dying at the age of 68.


36. Emily Badman (1894-1946) 3rd Class Passenger - Boat C



Emily awoke to the sound of loud scraping the night the ship sank, she was told by her acquaintance Edward Lockyer, who sady did not make it, to put on some warmer clothes. She refused to do so but did accompany him to a lifeboat which she got on. After the sinking Emily corresponded with her unrequited love Edward's mother, who reunited Emily with her glasses which Edward had kept safe for her and which was found on his body a week after the sinking.


Emily acted as bridesmaid to a fellow Titanic passenger and also herself went on marry and have four children, Emily died after a long illness aged 52 and is buried in New Jersey.


37. Allen Baggott (1884-1921) Titanic Crew - Lifeboat 9




Allen was a Saloon Steward aboard the Ship and received £3.15 a month in salary. After the sinking he returned to working at sea and suffered from alcoholism for the rest of his life, he suffered a seizure and died at the age of 36 and is buried in Malta.


38. Henry Bailey (1864-1943) Titanic Crew - Lifeboat 16




Henry was master at arms on the ship, and his monthly wages was £5.10. Henry took charge of lifeboat 16, he was not called up to testify to the Titanic enquiry. Henry re-enlisted in the navy when the war broke out, he died aged 77 and is buried in Southampton.


39. Percy Ball (1894-1933) Titanic Crew - Lifeboat 13




Percy was a Plate Steward aboard the ship, and received wages of £3.15 per month. After the sinking he continued his career at sea and served in the merchant service during WW1. He married and had 4 children, and passed away of Tuberculosis aged 39 and is buried in Southampton.


40. Ada Balls (1875-1967) 2nd Class Passenger - Lifeboat 10




Ada was accompanying her brother in law the Reverend Robert Bateman on the ship, who sadly did not survive. That night Ada who was a deeply religious woman, organised a prayer meeting then retired to bed only to be woken by her brother in law to be told of the ship hitting the iceberg. He went with her to the lifeboat and told her that they will meet again if not in this life then the next one. After the sinking Ada reunited with her sons and remarried, she gave several interviews about the Titanic in later life and passed away from Leukemia at the age of 92.
