Survivors of the Titanic - Part 2

Fact: The only Japanese survivor was condemmed for doing so.


11. Laṭīfah al-Ba'qlīnī (1888-1962) 3rd Class - Lifeboat C

Latifah managed to escape the ship with her whole family, a rarity for third class passengers. However after shortly arriving in New York, Latifah's daughter Eugenie died of meningitis. Her daughter Helen then followed in 1939 when she died of cancer. Latifah and her husband then went on to have two more children. Latifah never cared to discuss her experience on the Titanic and died at the age of 73.


12. Eugenie al-Ba'qlīnī (1909-1912) 3rd Class - Lifeboat C

Eugenie escaped from the Titanic only to die tragically from Meningitis only a few months later.


13. Mārīyā al-Ba'qlīnī (1906-1982) 3rd Class - Lifeboat C



(Mariya or Marie is buried alongside her husband)


Mariya survived the sinking with her whole family, after the disaster she went on to become a department store manager and marry George who worked at a newspaper, Mariya and George had a child and lived out the rest of her life in Brooklyn dying at the age of 75. Mariya was one of the survivors who reported hearing gunfire that night as she got into the lifeboat.


14. Fahīm Rūḥānā al-Za'innī (1886-1927) 3rd Class - Lifeboat 6




Fahim or Phillip, tried to leap into one of the lifeboats that night but was met by an angry officer who waved a gun in his face and screamed women and children first! However when this officer was distracted Phillip leapt from the Titanic deck and into the middle of a lifeboat, Phillip then took charge of one of the oars ignoring a desperate plea from a female passenger to save her dog. Phillip went on later to have four children , however he had a spot of trouble with the law when he was accused of beating up his wife! His wife shortly after disappeared with his children and he never saw them again. Phillip died of Typhiod Fever at the age of 41.


15. Ernest Frederick Allen (1888-1968) Titanic Crew - Lifeboat B




Ernest was a Trimmer on the ship, on the night of the sinking he went looking for his nephew Frederick but had no luck, Frederick tragically lost his life in the disaster. Ernest survived by climbing on to the upturned collapsible lifeboat B. Later on he married and had five children, he later ran off with another woman and saw very little of his children, he died aged 80 and his ashes were scattered at sea.


16. Elisabeth Walton Allen (1882-1967) 1st Class - Lifeboat 2




Elisabeth was on board with her aunt, her aunt's maid and her cousin, whom all survived the sinking, after the disaster Elisabeth was asked for a quote on Bruce Ismay the man known as the Titanic coward, and she leapt to his defence. Elisabeth filed a claim against the Titanic for two thousand four hundred and twenty seven dollars for the loss of her things. Elisabeth remained close to her cousin for the rest of her life, and fought illness in later life dying of heart failure at the age of 85.


17. Hudson Trevor Allison (1911-1929) 1st Class - Lifeboat 11




Hudson was the only survivor of his entire family, his mum, dad and big sister all died in the disaster. Trevor escaped the Titanic with his nanny Alice. After the sinking Trevor was raised by his aunt and uncle however tragedy stuck when Trevor was 18 when he died of food poisoning. He is buried with his father.


18. Carla Christine Nielsine Andersen-Jensen (1893-1980) 3rd Class - Lifeboat 16




Cara was on the ship with her fiancée, brother and uncle, Cara was the only survivor out of the party. Cara was one of the passengers who heard the Titanic band playing 'nearer my god to thee' as the lifeboat pulled away from the ship. After the ship Cara married and had three children. She passed away age 87 and is buried in the nightdress she wore on the night the Titanic sank.


19. Henry Anderson (1869-1951) 1st Class- Lifeboat 3




Harry was one of the first people into a lifeboat, when he reached New York, Harry carried on with his job as a broker. He remarried and refused to talk about his Titanic experiences, he died at the age of 82 and is buried with his wife.


20. John Anderson (1870-1914) Titanic Crew- Lifeboat 3



( I could not find a picture of John or his burial place, so here is a picture of Cardiff Bute Dock where his body was discovered in 1914)


John was an Able Seaman aboard the ship, his Titanic experience took a heavy toll on him and he was admitted to an asylum where he escaped from in 1914. His body was found in Cardiff Bute Dock, having sadly drowned. He was only 44.
