Survivors of the Titanic - Part One

This series will be about the 712 lucky souls who survived that cold night in the Atlantic in 1912.


1. Rhoda Mary Abbott (1837-1946) 3rd Class - Lifeboat A



Rhoda jumped from the Titanic into the icy water of the sea with her two sons, Eugene and Rossmore. Rhoda managed to make it to lifeboat A, however her two sons perished. Rhoda spent the rest of her life in morning for her sons. She died lonely at the age of 73 of Hypertension.


2. Karen Marie Abelseth (1895-1969) 3rd Class - Lifeboat 16



Karen was woken up by her cousien Adolf and when venturing into the corridor became frightend at seeing fellow passengers walking around with suitcases. She was escorted to the lifeboat by family friends who she was also traveling with. After the sinking Karen married and had five children. She passed away at the age of 73 of Parkinsons Disease.


3. Olaus Jorgensen Ableseth (1886-1980) 3rd Class - Lifeboat A



Olaus helped place his friend Karen into a lifeboat, Olaus swam for half and hour in the sea before he reached lifeboat A. After the sinking he married had four children and continued with his farming. He passed away aged 94 of Heart Failure.


4. Anna Abelson (1883-1972) 2nd Class - Lifeboat 10



Anna was placed in Lifeboat 10 by an unknown person, she sadly lost her husband in the sinking. After the sinking Anna became known for her dramatic recollections of the disaster. Anna remarried and retired to Florida, where she passed away at the age of 88.


5. Sha'ninah Abi Sa'b (1874-1947) 3rd Class - Lifeboat C




Sha was rescued by a male first class passenger and put in Lifeboat C, Sha saw several passengers in her lifeboat freeze to death. After the sinking Sha returned to her job going door to door doing household duties. She passed away at the age of 73.


6. Nasif Qasim Abi Al Muna (1884-1962) 3rd Class - Lifeboat 15



Nasif was on the ship with his cousin Farid and his son Husayn, both perished in the disaster. Nasif helped people on the ship before getting onto a lifeboat, in later years he continued to visit his wife and child in Lebanon, and had another child before his marriage broke down and he remarried, having five daughters with his second wife. Nasif died at the age of 77.


7. August Abraham Johannes Abrahamsson (1892-1961) 3rd Class - Lifeboat 15



August was asleep at the time of the collision and couldn't be bothered to check out the commotion, however when his roommate failed to come back he became worried and went to investigate. He then on seeing the panic returned to warn his friend Eino who was in a different cabin. After the sinking he married and became a building contractor. He passed away at the age of 69.


8. Leah Aks (1891- 1967) 3rd Class - Lifeboat 4 or 13



Leah became separated from her son during the sinking and they were rescued in separate lifeboats, aboard rescue ship Carpathia Leah frantically searched for her son Frank, she then heard a baby cry, recognizing it as her son she rushed towards the cry to find an Italian woman with her son! The woman refused to give Leah her son and it was only with the intervention of the Carpathia's captain was Leah reunited with Frank. After the sinking Leah went on to have two further children with her husband, she became an active member of her community and gave frequent talks about the Titanic to the media. Leah passed away at the age of 76.


9. Frank Aks (1911-1991) 3rd Class - Lifeboat Number Unknown


Frank became separated from his mum during the panic, thankfully they were both reunited on the Carpathia thanks to its captain. After the sinking Frank gained two siblings, he married and collected masses of Titanic memrobilia during his lifetime. Frank passed away aged 80.


10. Hilanah al-B'aqlīnī (1909-1939) 3rd Class - Lifeboat C

Hilanah managed to escape the ship with her entire family, when she got to America Hilanah changed her name to Helen Barbara Baclini, she also got married and had a daughter. However tragedy befell her at the end of the 30s when she died of cancer at the age of 29.
