We have all heard about the human cost of the Titanic disaster, but what about the animal one? The Titanic had a range of animals onboard ranging from dogs to chickens. Sadly of all the animals aboard only three dogs survived. The three lucky animals were...

Lady The Pomeranian- Owned by Margaret Bechstein Hays

Lady was lucky enough to be smuggled into a lifeboat in her owners coat, the dog lived until 1917 when she sadly ran away and was never seen again.

Elizabeth Rothschild's Pomeranian

Elizabeth managed to smuggle her dog into a lifeboat undetected, sadly after the sinking the dog perished after getting into a fight with another dog in New York.

Sun Yat Sen - Owned by Henry Sleeper Harper

Sun Yat Sen was taken in a lifeboat by his owner, according to him no other passengers objected, nothing is known about the dog after the sinking. I hope he lived a long life unlike the other two.

Pets were kept in the kennels on F Deck, the man in charge of the animal's welfare was the ships carpenter John Hutchinson (Died in the disaster aged 28, Body not recovered) who fed and watered them and was responsible for their exercise. When the ship was sinking an unknown person freed the animals on F Deck and they were reportedly running rampant as the ship faltered. Other animals that perished in the sinking, excluding dogs, were Jenny the Ship's Cat (Both Jenny and her kittens Perished), and 30 Cockerels.
